I still enjoy it, but for the most part Thella dragged it down. At the beginning section mcxaffrey the novel, I was unsure how McCaffrey was going to tie in the many different character she introduces in the prologue where she quickly jumps through brief mini-stories, giving us glimpses of different characters. It also gives us a new take renegadees events from other points of view. They are still important and I still think they are fantastic, but there are also other characters that are just as lovable and important.
All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all.

I’d be tempted to go Chaotic Evil Robin Hood too! It’s just a mccatfrey showing the back story of Sharra from the White Dragon and bridging Piemur’s story from Dragondrums to the White Dragon, mccaffrry then ending with the beginning of All the Weyrs of Pern.

The Southern Continent bits, while interesting, and certainly set the scene for the next book, felt somewhat rushed. It is awfully dry. The main thrust of the plot in the early novel are the ‘Renegades’ and the brigands?

Want to Read saving…. It seems a poorly put-together book, but I nevertheless relished the bits about Piemur growing up and continuing his story from Dragondrums. Yes there were slow parts and yes there were a few too many names to remember. The most interesting part of this story is the re-discovering of the Southern Continent and the original Landing site of the renegadse settlers to Pern. Maybe that’s because if you squint your eyes and look sideways, shrimp are kind of dragonlike, and I was eating them in the right company!

It only really starts getting into a story of its own near the end where things make a complete turn and everything changes. But when Thella mistakenly vented her rage on Jayge’s family, she made a dangerous mistake.
I also didn’t buy the Jayge Aramina love. As the Fall comes to an end, a dragonrider – an Oldtimer – lands and angrily berates them for being unprepared for Fall – the fact that they are out in Fall, and that Kimmage Hold hasn’t prepared a ground crew. Dude, even McCaffrey got bored with her own new deeply boring characters halfway through the book, chucked the whole Holdless plotlines for huge swathes, and went back to focusing on Piemur and Toric and the politics of the Southern continent.
The exploration of the Southern Continent and discovery of ancient human relics there including the activities of Piemur and Menolly from the Harper Hall trilogy also figure in the novel, which ends where All the Weyrs of Pern begins. Other books in the series.
